Introduction
The Panch Kedar Yatra 2025 is one of the most spiritually and physically demanding pilgrimages in Uttarakhand. Nestled deep in the Garhwal Himalayas, these five ancient temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, each with a unique legend tied to the Mahabharata.
The journey to these five temples—Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar—is a soul-stirring experience that combines devotion, myth, and the pristine beauty of the Himalayas.
What is Panch Kedar?
Panch Kedar refers to five temples of Lord Shiva located in the remote hills of Garhwal, Uttarakhand. It is believed that after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva for forgiveness. Shiva, avoiding them, transformed into a bull and disappeared into the ground in five parts across this region. These five sites are now revered as Panch Kedar.
The Five Temples of Panch Kedar

1. Kedarnath – The Hump of the Bull
- Location: Rudraprayag district
- Altitude: 3,583 meters
- Trek: 16–18 km from Gaurikund
- Best Time to Visit: May to October
The most famous of the Panch Kedar, Kedarnath houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The temple sits beneath the majestic Kedarnath peak and is believed to be the place where Shiva’s hump appeared.
2. Tungnath – The Arms of the Bull

- Altitude: 3,680 meters (Highest Shiva Temple in the world)
- Trek: 3.5 km from Chopta

5. Kalpeshwar – The Hair of the Bull

- Location: Chamoli district
- Altitude: 2,200 meters
- Trek: 2 km from Urgam village (Road accessible up to village)

Suggested Route for Panch Kedar Yatra
While most pilgrims visit Kedarnath independently, a full Panch Kedar circuit typically follows this order:
Kedarnath → Madhyamaheshwar → Tungnath → Rudranath → Kalpeshwar
- Ideal Duration: 15–20 days
- Start Point: Rishikesh/Haridwar
- Trekking Required: Yes, for most temples
- Best Season: May to October (except Kalpeshwar, open all year)
Spiritual Significance of Panch Kedar Yatra
Each temple in the Panch Kedar represents a body part of Lord Shiva, symbolizing the cycle of creation and destruction, as well as purification and penance. Doing the yatra is considered equivalent to visiting Kashi and is said to lead to mukti (liberation).

“Chalo Pahad, Chalo Panch Kedar — ek aisi yatra jahan har mod par Shiva ka vaas hai.”
